Dóchas statement on ongoing issue at Goal
Following the announcement today of Barry Andrew’s decision to stand down as Chief Executive of Goal, Dóchas – The Irish Association of Non-Governmental Development Organisations – would like to acknowledge his personal contribution and commitment to the organisation, and to wish him well in his future endeavours.
It is our understanding that the investigations into Goal’s work in Syria are still ongoing and we await the findings of those investigations. However, as Barry Andrews has stated, weaknesses exist in internal procedures within Goal which need to be corrected in order to be more robust. It is imperative that Goal makes the necessary changes to these procedures as quickly as possible, in order to fully assure their donors and the wider public.
It must be acknowledged that Goal works in some of the most difficult parts of the world, and it is of vital importance that those needing life-saving assistance are not impacted negatively because of this issue. There remains an urgent need to continue to provide humanitarian and development assistance through international non-governmental organisations, including in countries like Syria, where more than 1.7 million people remain stranded in the most horrific circumstances.
Dóchas continues to uphold and advocate for best practice and the highest standards of good governance within the international development sector and across its membership.
