Irish NGOs come together to call for an Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza, West Bank, and Israel

On Monday 18th December, International development and humanitarian organisations in Ireland are coming together to call for an immediate ceasefire in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Ireland joins more than 90 countries across the world to mark a Global Day of Action to push for a sustained ceasefire and the protection all civilians who have been affected.

The conflict has resulted in the loss of thousands of lives, injuries, mass displacement, and the heart-wrenching reality that even children have not been spared from the devastating consequences. The magnitude of the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding demands urgent action to protect the lives and well-being of all those affected.

This is a critical moment that necessitates swift and decisive action from the political leadership across the globe. Dóchas urges leaders, including the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste, to prioritize diplomacy, dialogue, and peaceful negotiations. It is crucial that the international community comes together to broker a lasting ceasefire that can bring an end to the suffering of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

Speaking on this international day of action, CEO of Dóchas Jane-Ann McKenna said ‘We stand united with the millions around the world who demand an immediate end to the violence in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel. Ms McKenna added ‘Every day that passes without a ceasefire equals more suffering and loss of life. In solidarity with those who are bearing the brunt of this conflict, we are making a collective plea for humanity and compassion in the face of adversity.’

Rosamond Bennett, Chief Executive of Christian Aid Ireland, said ‘The level of devastation and human suffering across Gaza is almost incomprehensible. In little over two months around 20,000 people have been killed, including 8,000 children. Nearly 2 million people have fled their homes and most are trapped in overcrowded and unsanitary shelters, with little more than rubble to return to. One of the gravest moral disasters in recent memory is unfolding and many world leaders cannot summon the courage to say stop. We have to keep the pressure up until we see an immediate, permanent and life-saving ceasefire.’
