(1) Save the Date: Charity Trustees Week: "Safeguarding: What should a Trustee know?" - 12 November
As part of Charity Trustees Week 2024, Dóchas will host a webinar titled “Safeguarding: What Should a Trustee Know?” on Tuesday 12 November at 11 am. This event aims to inform charity trustees and board members about safeguarding and how they can support the implementation of safeguarding measures and the development of a strong safeguarding culture. Speakers will be drawn from amongst Dóchas membership and Member Board Trustees. Speakers will discuss key issues in Safeguarding followed by a Q&A from the audience. This event will be hosted by the Dóchas Safeguarding Working Group. Find out more about the event and register here.
Upcoming Events & Conferences
(1) Concern Worldwide: COP ON ! with Concern Worldwide 2024 - 19 October
Join Concern for a day of climate action, workshops and panels on Saturday October 19th at The Complex in Dublin. COP ON will explore climate justice, policy, and diplomacy through workshops from NYCI, Friends of the Earth, Climate Negotiators, the Feminist Communities for Climate Justice, and Concern. Concern’s new youth climate ambassador, Alannah Wrynn, will host a global panel of youth climate activists. We will also hear from Caroline O’Doherty from the Irish Independent and Kevin O’Sullivan from the Irish Times on how they tackle the challenges of communicating climate change. (2) Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI): Annual Commercial Law Conference - 24 October
IRLI will host its 2024 Commercial Law Conference on Thursday, 24th October from 4 - 6.30pm at the Distillery Building and is sponsored by Matheson LLP. The aim of the conference is to offer a platform for both solicitors and barristers to share knowledge and expertise on commercial law. This year, the theme will be "Recent Commercial Litigation Updates". Rossa Fanning, Attorney General, will deliver the keynote address. Judge Liam Kennedy will facilitate a panel of speakers including David Whelan SC, Joe Jeffers SC, Una Nesdale BL, Ruadhán Kenny (Partner at Matheson) and Kate Harnett (Of Counsel at A&L Goodbody). (3) National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI): Youth Climate Justice Conference - 26 October
This youth-led event was created by young people, for young people. It is an opportunity for young people who are already working towards Climate Justice to showcase their work, learn from one another, gain activism skills, and to meet like-minded peers. The event will take place from 10am to 3.30pm in the Alex Hotel Dublin. This event is for young people aged 14-24, and Youth Workers are welcome to accompany the young people they work with. (4) DSAI: Annual Conference: Achieving Just Food Systems in Era of Global "Polycrisis"' - 30 & 31 October
DSAI Annual Conference will take place on 30th & 31st October in Nano Nagle Place, Cork. The theme is Achieving Just Food Systems in Era of Global ‘Polycrisis’. A number of pre-conference events will take place on the 30th prior to the opening plenary. Tickets are all inclusive. Find out more and register here.
(5) IFIAD: Annual Conference: Financing Zero Hunger - 6 November
The Irish Forum for International Agricultural Development (IFIAD) will host its Annual Conference on 6th November, 10am – 3pm, Iveagh House, Dublin, with the support of Irish Aid, Department of Foreign Affairs. With only 6 years remaining until 2030, this year's conference will focus on Financing Zero Hunger. Find out more and register here.
(6) SADIE Network: "The right to food, the reality of hunger: Food insecurity on the margins" - 9 December
The SADIE Network are hosting a hybrid symposium on the 9th of December from 9am to 5pm. The symposium will be held in the Trinity Long Room Hub but can also be accessed online. This symposium will bring together international voices on food insecurity, including academics, practitioners and experts by experience. Focusing on persons and communities pushed to the margins by colonialism, ableism and other forms of systemic marginalisation, the symposium will highlight the disproportionate impact of food insecurity on groups who find themselves in spaces of exclusion. (7) GISF: Global Security Risk and Policy Conference - 25-27 February 2025
In February 2025, GISF will host its inaugural Global Security Risk and Policy Conference. The 2025 conference is titled "At what cost? The true cost and value of security risk management". The event will be themed around funding and resourcing forNGO security risk management. We will bring together representatives from UN agencies, major government donors, humanitarian networks and senior NGO staff to shape commitments to improve the safety and security of aidworkers. Upcoming Meetings, Seminars & Workshops
(1) Front Line Defenders & Smashing Times: Dublin Arts and Human Rights Festival - 11-20 October
The Dublin Arts and Human Rights Festival is an annual, international festival organised by Smashing Times International Centre for the Arts and Equality and Front Line Defenders, a Dublin-based international organisation working to improve the security and protection of human rights defenders at risk. It is held in partnership with Fighting Words, Irish Council for Civil Liberties, National Women’s Council of Ireland, Trócaire, Poetry Ireland, and Irish PEN. This year’s festival runs from 11 – 20 October, with the theme ‘In Solidarity: An International Celebration of Arts and Human Rights’. Events taking place include an Open Mic Night on October 17th and a Panel Discussion titled “Where Should They Go?” Migrants and Refugees’ on October 20th. (2) University College Dublin: Covert Warfare and the Performance of Humanitarian Neutrality in Cold War Central America - 21 October
On 21 Oct, Dr Maria Cullen will speak on the tensions between and within humanitarian organisations over the relevance of the principle of neutrality to their work in Cold War Central America in the 1980s. Using archival and oral history research, the paper will discuss how agencies engaged with this challenging context – from knowledge of covert surveillance, to collusion of other organisations, to the tendency for staff to engage in active solidarity with Salvadorans. (3) Global Village: Weekly online Ciorcal Comhrá/Irish Language Conversation Group
Global Village is a Global Citizenship Education (GCE) programme for primary schools in Ireland. Global Village is initiating a weekly online Ciorcal Comhrá (Irish language conversation group) on Wednesdays from 11-11.30a.m. You are very welcome to join us for as many or as few sessions as suits you. (6) The Wheel: Leadership Academy Breakfast Club - 7 November
The Leadership Academy is delighted to present the next event of their Breakfast Club series on the topic of Leadership & Technology, taking place on Thursday 7 November from 10:00am to 11:30am. As technology and remote work embed in our lives now, the panel will discuss technology and answer some questions such as "How does technology effect leadership styles?" and "In what wasy has technology changed the way we lead?". To answer these, the Breakfast Club will welcome Sheena Horgan, Board Director and former CEO of Drinkaware and Psychological Society of Ireland, and Dr. Colin Hughes, Head of the Graduate Business School at TU Dublin. Food and Nutrition Security Advisor
The Food & Nutrition Security Advisor will contribute to the achievement of GOAL’s global strategy: From Crisis to Resilience, and is responsible for supporting GOAL’s global programme addressing food and nutrition insecurity using a systems approach. (8) UNHCR Ireland: Senior Programme Associate
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency is recruiting a Senior Programme Associate to manage a new project from its Dublin office. The project aims to embed trauma informed practice in the provision of accommodation to international protection applicants in Ireland. (1) Christian Aid Request for Proposals: Refining ‘Cases of Change’ approach for Multi- Country Learning and Evaluation
CAI seeks an external consultant, to help us refine the 'cases of change' methodology and process by working with CAI and country team to evolve thinking in a number of areas. (2) Centre for Global Education: Research Consultancy
The Centre for Global Education invites tenders for a research study titled “Poverty in Northern Ireland: From the Local to the Global” which aims to discern the main drivers of poverty in Northern Ireland and persistent trends, and to make informed recommendations that could support anti-poverty policy interventions. The research will frame poverty in Northern Ireland in a comparative context by drawing upon the work of UK, all-island and international poverty data and analysis. The Centre for Humanitarian Action at University College Dublin is offering a fully funded doctoral scholarship. Proposals are welcome concerning any aspect of the intersection of governance and the fields of disaster risk reduction and/or climate adaptation. (2) Saolta: Training of Trainers in Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI)
This training is free and open to all adult and community educators across the island of Ireland.
